Sunrise Sunset Times - Impact on Fishing Rules

The Basic Rules Relating to sunrise sunset times and the impact of Daylight Savings and Fishing times as published on the Fisheries Website at 2/10/2009 was still outlined as follows below.

This is out of date so contact your Fisheries Department Direct if you want to know the rules from October 2009 now that Daylight Saving is not taking place in WA;

daylight savings fisheries rules

Daylight Saving and Fisheries

The change from standard time (GMT + 8 hours) to daylight saving (GMT + 9 hours) at 2am on 26 October 2008, and back at 2am standard time on 29 March 2009, will have no effect on the permitted times for most fishing activity except lobster potting and diving.

In most fisheries the regulated times by the clock for fishing remained unchanged. Fishers should adjust their clocks forward one hour and fish by the displayed time.

Specific fishing regulations that define times for permitted activities include:

Daily bag limits

The definition of a day remains unchanged. Daily bag limits continue to apply between midnight and midnight in all fisheries except marron, where midday to midday applies as the period for a daily bag limit.

Net fishing times

Most of these are described relative to sunset and sunrise. Times regulated by the clock are unchanged and refer to standard time when daylight saving ends.

Recreational west coast abalone

The fishing times will remain 7.00 - 8.00am after daylight saving starts. Adjust your clocks for daylight saving and start fishing at 7.00am.

Rock lobster

A prohibition on pulling pots or taking western rock lobsters by diving at night exists to allow undersize lobster a chance to leave pots before they are pulled. These times are adjusted forward during daylight saving to prevent fishers operating during the hours of darkness.

Pulling lobster pots and diving for lobsters is prohibited at the following times:

Summer – daylight saving 8.30pm – 5.30am
(daylight saving time)
Winter – 1 April to 30 June 6.00pm – 6.00am
(standard time
